ARROYO CENTER / ARROYO SECO, Monterey County — October 30, 2026. People traveling west of Greenfield toward Fred’s Camp, Arroyo Seco recreation sites and nearby mountain routes should check current Los Padres National Forest access restrictions before departing. After the 2026 Timber and Plaskett fires, the U.S. Forest Service issued a revised Monterey Ranger District Emergency Closure Order effective September 26, 2026 through January 31, 2027, unless lifted or changed earlier.
What exactly is restricted?
CAL FIRE’s incident update says the September 26 order applies to specified National Forest lands, roads and trails within three mapped closure areas, rather than every property in Monterey County. The Ventana Wilderness Alliance’s Arroyo Seco access update also warned of broad restrictions after the fires and pointed visitors to the forest closure map. People should not infer that a campground is open simply because a third-party booking page shows available dates or that every private residence inside Arroyo Center lies within a national-forest closure.
What does the county road listing say?
Monterey County Public Works separately lists Arroyo Seco Road at its Carmel Valley Road intersection as closed due to the Timber Fire, with an August 30, 2026 initial date and an end date stated as until further notice. The intersection is a particular location, not a blanket declaration that the entire road running west from Greenfield is closed. Travel planners should verify the precise segment and approach road before treating the county’s notice as a complete route map.
Is the campground taking visitors?
Forest access rules and recreation reservations can change independently. For the Arroyo Seco Campground and nearby day-use areas, visitors should confirm the current U.S. Forest Service campground operating status, the forest order and maps, and any restrictions on parking or trail entry. Do not enter behind barriers or assume a paid reservation overrides an emergency closure.
Are there still active evacuation orders?
This article does not establish a present evacuation order for Arroyo Center homes. The federal forest access order is distinct from a local evacuation warning or order. Residents should use Alert Monterey County for address-specific public-safety instructions and consult official current fire agency updates for changes to roads and evacuation areas.
Where to verify a trip
Check the CAL FIRE Timber Fire incident history and September 26 order reference, the Monterey County road-closures page, and the Los Padres National Forest official alerts and closure maps. County Public Works lists (831) 755-4925 for road questions.
