ARROYO CENTER / ARROYO SECO, Monterey County — October 30, 2026. The U.S. Forest Service’s 2026 Los Padres National Forest concession prospectus provides a rare detailed description of water infrastructure at the Arroyo Seco Recreation Area west of Greenfield. The federal facility includes two 12,000-gallon water storage tanks — 24,000 gallons of combined nominal capacity — along with a well and treatment system for campgrounds and administrative operations.
What does the federal inventory list?
In the prospectus, the Forest Service describes a 65-foot-deep well, a pump house, ozone and filtration treatment, two steel storage tanks, approximately 13,300 linear feet of transmission pipe, 30 hose bibbs and three fire hydrants. Treated water moves by gravity from the tanks through PVC distribution mains and laterals. This is an inventory of designed facilities, not a fresh October pump test or statement that all 24,000 gallons are immediately available.
Who uses this system?
The federal description says it serves the family, group and primitive campground areas, a day-use area, the Forest Service administrative office, an employee trailer area and the fire station. Its stated layout explains why maintenance matters even when recreation access is restricted: administrative and emergency facilities may depend on pipes serving the same canyon.
Is this the same as Arroyo Center Water Company?
No. California58 separately reported a CPUC inventory listing approximately 60 service connections for the privately regulated Arroyo Center Water Company, public-water-system number CA2701658. The federal recreation-area system serves Forest Service facilities and campsites. The two inventories should not be combined to calculate household connections, water test results, tank storage for the private utility, or contamination findings.
What did the 2026 concession proposal require?
The January 2026 prospectus sought applicants to operate numerous government-owned recreation sites. It assigned the prospective permit holder day-to-day responsibilities for the Arroyo Seco system, including water sampling, required treatment/distribution operator qualifications and maintenance, with specific repairs to Forest Service administrative laterals remaining a federal responsibility. Its listed spring 2026 proposal deadline has passed. The prospectus does not establish whether a new contractor was selected, when an award became effective or which facilities reopened after the summer’s wildfires.
Can visitors use the campground now?
Do not infer that from this article. A facility appearing in a federal concession package is not a live opening announcement. The 2026 Timber and Plaskett fire-related closures and any later restrictions must be verified against Los Padres National Forest’s official alerts and maps and the campground’s current operator before driving into the Arroyo Seco canyon.

Editor’s note: These are documented specifications and proposed contractor duties as published in 2026, not a contemporary safety certification, a current campground reservation, an award notice, or evidence that all facilities are operating.
